About the item
A remarkable design by Marco Zanuso for Arflex Italy. Designed by the well-known Milan-based architect and designer Marco Zanuso (1916-2001), one of the pivotal designers part of the Italian “good design” modernist design movement during the 50s, 60s and 70s. Trained in architecture at the Politecnico di Milano university, he opened his own design office in 1945. Zanuso designed for many manufacturers, both furniture and non-furniture. Several of the most important designs by Zanuso was for Arflex, the furniture division of Pirelli tire company set up in 1948. His first design was the Antropus chair in 1949, followed in 1951 by the infamous Lady chair and sofa. The equally known Triennale sofa was introduced in 1952, followed in 1954 by the “Sleep-O-Matic” variant. By the late 50s, early 60s, Zanuso designed the Regent series and Mi-Lord lounge series, the latter featuring a rosewood multiplex frame with separate upholstered cushions and a rubber based underlay for the seating part. This Mi-lord is one of the lesser known however one of his most iconic designs to date. In 1964, the Mi-Lord series was expanded with another variant called the Baronet. Featuring the same materials however with an altered frame design, the Baronet is most likely the most minimalistic variant and will look excellent in any modernist or contemporary interior.
This specific Baronet lounge chair features a rosewood veneered multiplex frame with separate pillows in red Kvadrat Tonus. The fabric has been replaced in a later stage, for the rest the armchairs are in an original condition, with the original rubber based underlay.
About its condition
The rosewood frame is structurally in sound condition however the veneer has discoloured discoloured over time, most likely because the set has been placed in a veranda with strong sunlight exposure. Luckily the discolouration occurred nearly evenly therefore there is no or only very little difference in color on the frames visible. The frames have some small traces of use. The fabric and foam is in excellent condition and the rubber underlay as well.
